CitySec Austin is an informal meetup of information security professionals

up", or present a zero-day exploit to attend.

For what its worth, AHA (Austin Hackers, meeting on the last Wednesday of every month) doesn't require 0day or secret handshakes, just a presentation on the 1st or 2nd attendance. This month will be our 0x20th meeting and nearly all of them have been wildly successful (5-7 presentations, 15-40 people, with beer/food). The "mandatory" participation has keep the meetings full of quality content and has led to a number of collaborative projects. Since much of the AHA content consists of dry runs for public conferences, most speakers don't make their content public and we encourage attendees to respect their choice.
CitySec being more of a casual social/drinkup, sounds like alot of fun, and since its being held next door to the new BreakingPoint office, I look forward to attending frequently :-)
Time frame is not very friendly for anyone coming up from SA Town!
SAHA (San Antonio Hackers) is the same as AHA. No secret handshakes, no 0day's, just a presentation every now and again. First Wed of everymonth if your willing to make the drive down the road.
The problem is that busy people don't have time to create presentations. Many folks I know do not attend AHA on that basis.
Many AHA! speakers are also too busy to create materials. Giving a "presentation" doesn't necessarily require that you prepare any materials.
If someone has time to attend a three hour meetup, but can't come up with a 5-15 minute long presentation every few months, we are better off without them :-) Most of my AHA presentations are written at the meeting or directly before it, with a few exceptions (WarVOX and other long-term projects).
Saying attendees give a "talk" and/or show "presentations" at AHA is a misnomer. Most of the "talks" are people without slides or any prepared material at all. (The earliest I've started preparing for AHA was noon on the day of) People will spend 5 minutes explaining a new snippet of code, or bug they found... a quick explanation of something cool they ran across that month.
AHA is really just your normal hacker meet and greet but with a time-sharing algorithm so that the conversation stays technical and topical, rather than reducing itself into just another group of nerds drinking.

You know what would be fantastic? A website where folks interested in finding CitySec meetings could look them up! Maybe something with kind of a forum aspect, with threaded replies and such! I've heard Beast, on Rails, is just spectacular for this sort of thing.

I am sure you have been to other CitySec meetups but that is exactly the point. CitySec is as much about networking as anything else. There are no presentations. It is essentially a big happy hour. This is not a competing meetup but rather a different kind of meetup. Some people just stop by for a beer on the way home.

Certainly AHA is great and has its place. CitySec is different. It is more of a happy hour atmosphere. There are NO formal presentations. The information sharing is one on one as people mingle. AHA is a wonderful resource and the organizers are to be commended for having it. It is a great discussion of technical information. This is not intended to compete with or replace it.
Fair enough, I just took exception to the wording of what made CitySec different ;-)

I'm a C-5 quadriplegic and I used to be a welder but now I have to reeducate myself, I've always been more brawn than brains and I was wondering how much math is involved in becoming an information systems security professional or an AutoCAD technician-if anybody is taking these courses or have any suggestions about what a quadriplegic man could do for a living-I can use all the help I can get.
We were certainly not taking pot shots at AHA. That is the wording from the ChiSec and NYSec meetups.
